Nintendo have announced that not only is Super Mario Odyssey the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game to date, but also the fastest selling Mario title in the US. In the first 5 days the game sold over 1.1 million copies in North America alone.

This means that Super Mario Odyssey has surpassed the previous Mario series title holder in terms of quick sales. New Super Mario Bros. Wii used to have that top spot, which might have been thanks to the Nintendo Wii’s massive install base.

Back then, New Super Mario Bros. Wii beat out Super Mario Galaxy in sales — the former offering a more traditional side-scrolling experience versus Galaxy’s experimental and brilliant planetoid platforming. Personally speaking, I prefer Galaxy by quite the margin.

In terms of game-feel, Super Mario Odyssey is much closer to Galaxy than New Super Mario Bros. The Switch currently has no traditional Mario side-scrolling platform game.

The extreme success of Super Mario Odyssey just goes to show how warmly welcomed the Nintendo Switch has been. It might also show that somehow the public are more accepting of a 3D Mario game than they used to be back in the Wii days.

But one thing is for certain, Nintendo have done a great job marketing the game and making it look as brilliant as it is. Super Mario Odyssey has also been extremely well received critically, averaging 97 on both Metacritc and Open Critic.

To put that in perspective, that puts it at the highest rated game of the year on Open Critic, just ahead of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild at 96, Persona 5 at 94, and Divinity: Original Sin 2 also at 94.

Super Mario Odyssey is out now on Nintendo Switch.
